Amazon.com Review The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence. The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

South Beach Diet Works September 4, 2010 RockingKitty (Texas) This book is an easy and informational read. I learned so much about food, and reasons why I have failed at weight lost before. With this book you learn what to eat and why it is good for you. First of all let me say that I HATE DIETING, but this diet was different because I did not feel limited in food choice. In one month I lost about 20 pounds! The one thing I will say is hard about this diet is that you gotta make your food ahead of time, but once you get into it it becomes easier.
South Beach Diet August 23, 2010 N. O. Willoughby This book is very informative. I liked most of the recipes, but found some of them a little too exotic for my taste.
I lasted on Phase 1 only 11 days. Was feeling too sick and dizzy to continue.
Am now on Phase 2 which is much easier for me.
The book stressed many salads which must be great for warmer climates. I substituted soups made from chicken broth and green vegetables.
Success at last August 10, 2010 R. Paladino Very simply the best diet I've ever tried. I've lost 20 lbs that I've been trying to lose for about 15 years in just under a month, and have kept it off for 4 months with no problem. This book explains how carbs, protein and sugar works in the body, and how to make good food choices no matter where you eat. Once you understand and conquer the carb and sugar addiction the rest is "cake." I highly recommend this "way of life" to everyone.

Most diet books have one good page. In between the 100 pages of scientific theory and success stories and before the 100 pages of suggested menus and recipes, there is usually a page that outlines the diet in a flexible pattern. Not here.
Over all, this seems like a good sensible diet, low glycemic carbs, low saturated fat, a phase to get you started, one to keep you going and one for maintenance, but it's a huge flaw that the book doesn't contain a template for daily menu planning. The key to healthy eating, is a good plan and a well stocked kitchen. That's hard to do when all we have to get on with is a set menu that requires foods cooked with specialized recipes three times a day. Who wants to get up before work and cook a quiche? Who gets enough time to come home for lunch and cook some more? Dr A's big mistake was handing this diet to a registered dietician. Foodies may enjoy her recipes but those of us who need to get control of our eating should be thinking less about exotic variety and recipe preparation, not more.
My advice is to print-out the diet templates from the online sites, tape it to the refridgerator, and plan your meals as you go. Simplify.
A good food plan for your life, not just a diet August 2, 2010 J. Bouche (Dallas, OR USA) I started on this food plan about a month ago and have lost 13 pounds easily and without ever feeling hungry or deprived. This is a way of eating that I can follow the rest of my life. It's healthy, easy, and best of all, it works!
